Year 5

Welcome to Year 5's Class Page

I’d like to welcome you and your child back to school and the beginning of a new year in Year 5. We hope to have a year full of lots of new learning opportunities as well as celebrations and fun.

Topic

Our topic in our first term will be Ancient Greece. We will be looking at who they were, where they came from and what impact they brought to the world.  We will link our Art/DT to our current topic looking at Greek pottery and eventually be making our own. We will also have a class trip to Touchstones to learn more about the Ancient Greeks and how they lived. This will also give us the opportunity to have another class trip in the Summer linking to our topic on tourism in the local area.

PE Kits

Firstly, the week commencing 11th September we will begin our swimming programme every Friday afternoon.

PE will be every Thursday afternoon. Please could you ensure that your child has their P.E. kits in school at all times, this will ensure that they can be included in all lessons and not miss any opportunities for PE.

I would like to take the children outside for PE as much as possible this term therefore PE kit can be as follows;

  • T-shirt
  • Jumper
  • Shorts/track suit bottoms
  • Trainers/pumps
  • Socks

As you are aware we will not be giving out set homework however your child will still be given weekly spellings to learn and encouraged to read and learn times tables. Spellings will be given out on Wednesday and will need to be returned the following Monday.

They will also take a reading book home which will be changed each Monday. Please ensure your child returns their book on a Monday if they want it changing as it becomes difficult when changing books each day. Children will also be given a reading record to name and date and be expected to bring it in on Monday.

Your child should also be practising their timetables and doing approx 20min of reading each night. To help them become confident with their mental maths they must know their tables by heart.

I still encourage using a useful website that will help benefit their maths skills is top marks (Google top marks maths). This website has age appropriate maths games which can be alternative piece of homework.

It is very important that you spend time helping your child learn their spellings, reading, doing their homework and encouraging them to continue their learning at home to help them consolidate the learning taking place in school.

It is advisable that children have their own water bottles so that they are able to have a drink during the day if needed.  Please can you ensure that it is the ‘pop top’ style to avoid any spillages in lessons. If your child is bringing a packed lunch from home, it needs to be in a sealed lunch box and not a carrier bag.

I look forward to working with you again to help your child reach their full potential this year and hope they enjoy learning in Year 5. If you have any queries or concerns throughout the year, please do not hesitate to pop in and arrange a time to discuss these.
